Specialist Mentor - English, Literature or Mathematics | Psychology, Counselling, Mental Health or SEN Background

Scholars Hall | Full-time | Singapore Monthly remuneration: S$5,000–6,000,depending on relevant experience and teaching range. What we are building Scholars Hall brings together subject teaching, coaching and an understanding of how students think and feel. We work with students who lack confidence, feel anxious about learning or have stopped believing they can succeed. We support students with and without identified Neurodivergency/Special Needs (SEN). Our specialist mentors help students make academic progress and build the confidence to keep trying. We want to make a different kind of education possible in Singapore, bridging academic tuition and support for students' learning and wellbeing. Our mentors work one-to-one in students 'homes. You might help a student work through a math's problem, then help them feel ready to attempt the next one independently. Through patient, purposeful teaching, you build trust, useful habits and greater independence. We welcome applicants with education, training or practical experience in psychology, counselling, mental health, SEN or student wellbeing, alongside the ability to teach English, Literature or Mathematics. You do not need to have worked as an SEN teacher or teach all three subjects. Our students span primary school to JC; your roster will reflect the subjects, levels and student needs you can support confidently. What you will do ● Teach one or more of English, Literature or Mathematics within your areas of expertise. Plan for each student's syllabus, current understanding and examination requirements. Experience with JC General Paper, IB or IGCSE is also welcome. ● Identify what is holding a student back and adapt the lesson. That might mean breaking an essay or math's problem into smaller steps, using a visual explanation or helping an anxious student settle before trying again. ● Help students build confidence, manage frustration and develop a more positive relationship with learning. Support students with and without identified SEN, adapting to the individual and drawing on your relevant knowledge and experience. ● Give specific feedback and teach habits students can use independently. Keep clear progress notes and explain both academic progress and learning difficulties honestly to parents. ● Work with fellow mentors, take part in training and respond constructively to feedback. Share practical approaches that help us improve our teaching and support for students. How you will work with students ● Read the student: Read body language and tone of voice, and adapt your own energy to theirs so they feel comfortable and safe. Notice when a student is anxious, overwhelmed or needs a break. ● Build connection: Get to know the student and relate to them. Approach the relationship as a friend who is also a wiser, guiding figure. ● Adapt to different profiles: Different students need different strategies. For example, students with ADHD may benefit from repeated reminders of instructions and discussion-heavy activities that help them stay engaged and support their thinking. ● Be prepared to support diverse needs: You should be open to teaching students with common profiles such as ADHD and dyslexia, and autism where appropriate. Once you commit to a student, you are responsible for supporting them. You can always seek guidance and additional support when you need it, which is why our consultation process is particularly important. ● Personalise learning materials: Adapt materials to each student's needs, particularly for students with ADHD, for example through colour-coding, breaking tasks into smaller steps and reducing cognitive load. Teaching and wellbeing belong together We need someone who can combine patience with clear, purposeful teaching. You should know how to respond when a student is distressed, follow safeguarding procedures and recognise when to involve additional support. This role provides educational mentorship; it does not involve diagnosis or clinical treatment. Who we are looking for ● Ideally 2–5 years of relevant teaching, tutoring, mentoring or student-support experience. Applicants with a different career path who can demonstrate the relevant skills are welcome. ● Relevant education, training or practical experience in psychology, counselling, mental health, SEN or student wellbeing is essential. You can explain how this background would help you understand and support a learner's confidence, emotions or learning needs. ● Strong subject knowledge and teaching ability in at least one of English, Literature or Mathematics. You can explain concepts clearly, spot misunderstandings and give useful feedback at the levels you teach. Expertise in one subject is enough; additional subjects or levels are an advantage. ● Warmth and sound judgement with students, and the same respect for colleagues and operations staff. You listen, disagree constructively and take responsibility when something goes wrong. ● The humility to receive coaching regardless of a colleague's title or years of experience, and act on useful feedback. You can give a real example of changing your approach after someone challenged it. ● The organisation to manage preparation, records and communication independently in a remote team. You follow through on commitments, raise problems early and ask for help when needed. The practical commitments ● This is a full-time role. Regular availability on both Saturdays and Sundays is required, as weekends are our peak teaching period. Weekday afternoons and evenings are also part of the teaching schedule; days off are arranged on weekdays. ● We operate as a remote company. Preparation, administration and team communication are handled remotely, while lessons take place in students' homes across Singapore. ● You must be comfortable travelling between home lessons by public transport and planning journeys reliably. A driving license or car is not required. A travel allowance is provided. ● You must be comfortable appearin…
