This job acts as a project leader, coordinating the activities of other engineers, determining technical tasks, and improving existing structures and processes. It involves making technical decisions, collaborating with management to set standards, and representing the company to external partners.
Job Description:
Essential Responsibilities:
• Acts as a project or system leader, coordinating the activities of other engineers on the project or within the system
• Determines the technical tasks that other engineers will follow
• Actions result in the achievement of customer, operational, program or service objectives
• Proactively improves existing structures & processes
• Exercises judgement in reconciling diverse and competing priorities (time, quality, complexity risk) to identify optimal solutions to problems
• Notices patterns and condenses repetition into densely meaningful generalized solutions
• Collaborates with management to set/improve standards for engineering rigor
• Trusted to represent PayPal, Inc to the outside world via interactions with partners, customers, or industry organizations
Minimum Qualifications:
• 5+ years relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Responsibilities & Preferred Qualifications :
• Define and drive technical strategy and architecture for complex, cross-team systems.
• Identify and resolve systemic issues affecting scalability, reliability, and performance across the platform.
• Lead design and architecture reviews for major initiatives within your domain.
• Drive the adoption of AI-native engineering practices including AI-assisted development, LLM-powered product features, and agentic workflows.
• Partner with Product and multiple Engineering teams to shape technical roadmaps and long-term platform investments.
• Mentor senior and staff-track engineers; raise the technical bar through code reviews, design docs, and pairing.
• Lead by influence rather than authority build consensus across teams without direct reporting lines.
• Own resolution of the most ambiguous, high-risk technical problems (e.g., major migrations, platform re-architecture, incident post-mortems with systemic fixes).
• Represent engineering in cross-functional, translating technical trade-offs into business terms.
• Establish and evangelize engineering best practices, coding standards, and design principles org-wide.
• Evaluate and pilot emerging technologies (especially AI/ML tooling) and drive responsible adoption.
Required Qualifications
• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a track record of technical leadership at scale.
• Demonstrated experience owning architecture for large-scale, distributed, high-availability systems.
• Deep expertise in one or more languages (Java, Python, Go, C++, TypeScript) and the ability to go deep in unfamiliar stacks quickly.
• Strong grasp of distributed systems, system design trade-offs, scalability, and fault tolerance.
• Proven experience influencing technical direction across multiple teams without direct authority.
• Experience driving large, multi-quarter technical initiatives (migrations, platform rebuilds, major refactors) to completion.
• Strong track record of mentoring senior engineers and raising the technical bar org-wide.
• Excellent written and verbal communication able to write clear design docs and influence both engineers and executives.
• Deep familiarity with AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor) and driving org-wide adoption to boost engineering velocity.
